Mines of Utah

It was the 19th century that saw the boom in mining activity in Utah. The Mines of Utah attracted large number of people from the neighboring areas and provided ample job opportunities. It may be said that the economy of Utah has been hugely influenced by the mining activity done here. In fact, it was the Utah territory, an organized territory of the U.S formed between 1850 and 1896 that simply changed the fortune of the state.

MoThere are several mines in Utah, which were abandoned in the past. Generally when the minerals of a mine get exhausted, miners abandon the mine. Today rules are followed regarding the closure of a mine, but this was not the case several years back.

This resulted in the rise of a huge number of abandoned mines, which are dangerous and have caused lot of deaths in the recent years in Utah. There are about more than 20,000 mines scattered here and there across Utah, which are death traps for experienced and the inexperienced explorers.

Some of the Mines of Utah, the ones that are abandoned have no signs as such to alarm the explorers of the danger that lay hidden below. The old buildings, incomplete mine shafts, underground workings, toxic air, cave ins are a huge threat to the health and life of the workers.

Most of the minerals that were mined in the mines of Utah during the boom time included copper, gold, silver, molybdenum, zinc, lead, and beryllium. The Fossil fuel consisted of coal, petroleum and natural gas. It is also interesting to know that during the Cold War, the "wonder mineral" Uranium was mined in large quantities in the eastern part of Utah.

One of the famous and largest open pit mines of Utah is the Bingham Canyon Mine, which has the largest porphyry copper deposit in the southwestern part of the Salt Lake City, Utah, USA in the Oquirrh mountains. For more insight on mines of Utah, visit the following link,
