Apart from these two important units there is also a detached unit in the northern portion called as the Horeshoe Canyon unit. The two districts the Island in the Sky and the Needles to the south-east are easily accessible through the paved roads from United States . The Maze district is considered as the remotest of the three districts and it is only accessible from the west side through the unpaved roads. The Needles district has been named for the red and white banded rock pinnacles which dominate the park with different forms of naturally sculptured rock like canyons, grabens, potholes, and a numerous arches similar to the ones of the nearby Arches National Park.
