Great Salt Lake

The largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere, the Great Salt Lake is a popular tourist destination, owing to its being an important landmark in northern Utah. An integral part of the Utah history, culture, economy, commerce and physiology, Great Salt Lake has had an huge impact on the tourism and salt industry in the region. The lake is surrounded by the Salt Lake City in the east and southeast, the Oquirrh and Stansbury mountain ranges in the south and the Bonneville Salt Flats in the west. Marked by numerous islands, such as the Antelope, the Dolphin, the Black Rock and many others, Great Salt Lake offers its visitors an enchanting sunset. It is a delight for the photographers!

The high salinity of the water does not allow many fishes. But it does accommodate the brine shrimp and the flocks of many migratory bird species, which form an important part of the ecological system. About 25 percent of the salt or sodium chloride, available in the water, is extracted and processed, by industries such as the Morton International, the Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemical, and others.

The surface area of Great Salt Lake varies with in relation to the water level, and consequently results in a changing shoreline. Two of the best known shores of Great Salt Lake are the Bridger Bay Beach and the Antelope Island, with endless kilometers of white beach. Due to the high salinity of the water, human beings can float in the water without sinking. This one-of-its kind experience and the natural beauty makes it a frequented tourist attraction in north Utah.

The Antelope Island State Park and the Great Salt Lake State Marina offer to its tourists some great spots for viewing the beauty of this region. Some of the popular activities here are hiking, bicycling and family picnics. There are guided launch tours as well, which ensure you enjoy the unique and pristine beauty of the place.
