Kings Peak

The highest peak in the State of Utah, Kings Peak is one of the most popular destinations for those interested in some serious backpacking. Located in the Duchesne County in the south of the Uinta Mountains and named after Clarence King, a surveyor in the area, the Kings Peak boasts an height of 13,528 ft. Falling under the preserve of the Ashley National Forest, the Kings Peak like many other high peaks of the Uinta Mountains, is part of the High Uintas Wilderness areas. The objective behind this is to preserve the wild alpine, fir and spruce forests, the wild predators and rare species of birds of the region, the rich flora and fauna at its natural best. The area is the home for such animals as wolves, mountain lions, mountain goats, coyotes, moose, black bears and river otters, among others.

The biodiversity of the King's Peak has made it an hot favorite for many hikers and backpackers, with more than 5000 hikers visiting through the year. There are some beautiful trails, though this must be reached after a hike across the dust roads. One of the most popular trails is through the Henry Fork Basin, in the north of Kings Peak, taking about three days on an average. From the south, it can be accessed through the Swift Creek Trail and Basin, though this is a much longer route.

The lakes and streams that frequent these trails are good spots for camping and trout fishing. A great place for solitude and to get away from the rush of the cities. The peak season to make these trips is July and August. But one should also consider the snowfall, as it often extends till early August in the Uinta Mountains. The rich wilderness of the area and the thrill to climb the highest peak of the state makes the Kings Peak and the Uinta mountains a good destination every summer.
